The Interview

Late in the afternoon, Dr. Clyde Daniel and a medical reporter sat at a table in a local diner, discussing the mother of all healthcare conspiracies.
REPORTER: You said you have evidence that the medical establishment has purposely mishandled cancer for decades.
DR. DANIEL: I said I have a theory. There’s a difference.
REPORTER: What’s the theory?
DR. DANIEL: What if a tumor isn’t the enemy? What if it’s the body’s response to the enemy?
REPORTER: You mean the tumor itself?
DR. DANIEL: Yes. Think about what happens when cells stop behaving normally. They stop responding to the signals that tell them when to stop growing and how to stay connected to the surrounding tissue.
REPORTER: You’re talking about contact inhibition?
DR. DANIEL: Exactly. When cells lose that normal control, the body recognizes that something is wrong. My theory is that the immune system tries to contain those abnormal cells. It builds a wall around them.
REPORTER: And that wall is the tumor?
DR. DANIEL: That’s what I believe.
REPORTER: Most cancer doctors would disagree with you.
DR. DANIEL: I know, that’s why I’m sitting in a diner instead of speaking at a medical conference.
REPORTER: So where does the mishandling conspiracy come in?
Dr. Daniel looks toward the window before answering.
DR. DANIEL: The conspiracy begins after the tumor forms.
REPORTER: Are you talking about the biopsy?
DR. DANIEL: Think about it. The needle goes into the tumor, and the tissue is removed. The barrier is disturbed.
REPORTER: You’re saying that can spread the cancer?
DR. DANIEL: I’m saying that’s the question nobody in medicine ever wants to ask.
REPORTER: But biopsies are routinely performed because doctors need to determine what they’re dealing with.
DR. DANIEL: That’s what we’re told.
REPORTER: And what do you think?
DR. DANIEL: I think we may be breaking into the very structure the body created to contain the disease.
REPORTER: Earlier on the phone, you mentioned breast cancer specifically.
DR. DANIEL: Breast tissue is soft and highly connected. Now imagine a tumor sitting there, surrounded by tissue that’s trying to contain it. Then, someone applies pressure during a mammogram or inserts a needle.
REPORTER: And the cancer cells escape?
DR. DANIEL: That’s my concern.
REPORTER: But you don’t have proof that routine mammograms or biopsies cause systemic cancer.
DR. DANIEL: Not any proof that would survive a hearing conducted by the same people who profit from the current system.
REPORTER: Now we’re getting to your real accusation.
DR. DANIEL: Big Pharma makes billions of dollars treating cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery generate enormous profits. Then there are drugs for the side effects of those procedures, and then more drugs.
REPORTER: You’re saying the industry wants cancer to continue?
DR. DANIEL: I’m saying there’s a financial incentive for cancer to remain a disease that requires years of treatment.
REPORTER: That’s a serious accusation.
DR. DANIEL: I’m well aware of that.
REPORTER: What happens after the tumor is disturbed?
DR. DANIEL: In my theory, cancer cells that were contained can enter the circulation and travel elsewhere.
REPORTER: And then chemotherapy and radiation are used.
DR. DANIEL: Yes, of course.
REPORTER: Which you believe makes things worse?
DR. DANIEL: I believe we may be attacking the patient’s ability to fight the disease at the same time we’re trying to kill the disease.
REPORTER: Because chemotherapy and radiation can damage healthy cells and affect the immune system.
DR. DANIEL: Exactly.
REPORTER: But cancer treatment is not simply designed to destroy the immune system.
DR. DANIEL: I didn’t say it was.
REPORTER: Then what are you saying?
DR. DANIEL: I’m saying we’ve built an entire system around attacking the tumor. Maybe we’ve never stopped to ask why the body created the tumor in the first place.
A waitress places a slice of cake between them.
WAITRESS: Anything else?
REPORTER: No, thanks.
She walks away.
REPORTER: Doctor, if you’re right, you’re saying the entire model of cancer treatment is wrong.
DR. DANIEL: I’m saying we should be willing to question it.
REPORTER: And if you’re wrong?
DR. DANIEL: Let them prove me wrong.
REPORTER: That’s not how medicine works.
DR. DANIEL: Maybe that’s the real problem.
The reporter turns off the recorder.
REPORTER: One last question. Why come forward now?
Dr. Daniel looks at the clock above the counter.
DR. DANIEL: Because I spent many years treating patients the wrong way!
REPORTER: And?
DR. DANIEL: And eventually, I started asking questions I wasn’t supposed to ask.
He stands, leaves a few dollars on the tabletop, and walks toward the door.
REPORTER: Doctor.
Dr. Daniel stops.
REPORTER: What happens if the public finds out?
He looks back.
DR. DANIEL: Then somebody is going to have a lot of explaining to do.
The bell above the diner door rings as he walks out of the establishment.
