Why Everyone Needs a Good Chiropractor

Not very long ago I attended a health fair where I performed chiropractic spinal exams for members of my community. After checking a prospective patient on my portable chiropractic table, the man got up and said to me, “But I feel great doc – why do I need a chiropractor?” I hear this same question over and over again from different laypersons I examine at health screenings. The answer to the man’s question is actually very important for readers to understand. Chiropractic has absolutely nothing to do with how patients are feeling and everything to do with how they are functioning.

Traditional chiropractors are doctors who specialize in monitoring the integrity of the spinal column’s alignment. Most of the spinal problems that chiropractors work on do not cause pain or discomfort in people. They do, however, cause a loss of general health and well being in all human beings.

Chiropractic is often misunderstood by many people. Quite a few laypersons mistakenly believe that chiropractic is some sort of “new age” therapy for back and neck pain. The idea that chiropractic is nothing more than a “mechanical aspirin” has been promoted over time by organized medicine. The origin of such blatant disinformation comes from a plethora of drug companies that relentlessly paint traditional chiropractic’s objective as something that is less than scientific.

Tiny misalignments, which can regularly occur within the framework of the human spinal column, can place pressure on spinal nerves that exist in close proximity to the spinal bones. These tiny misalignments, for the most part, do not cause symptomatic discomfort in patients. Spinal misalignments, also known as vertebral subluxations, can interfere with the nervous system’s ability to function properly. Chiropractors perform regular spinal examinations for patients in an effort to determine where specific subluxations are located within the spinal column. Once a subluxation is located, the chiropractor uses a manual (by hand) adjustment to correct the bone’s alignment in relationship to the other spinal segments above and below it.

Because most of the spinal nerves in the body are not involved with transmitting pain sensations to the brain, it is nearly impossible for patients to determine when or where they might be subluxated. Only a skilled chiropractor is capable of determining when a particular patient is subluxated and needs to be adjusted.

Sometimes patients will claim that they can tell if subluxations are present within their spines. In reality, this is not likely. Patients can often feel muscle pain and other soft tissues that might be injured however, the possibility of a patient identifying the location or existence of a specific subluxation is remote at best.

It is my recommendation to the members of any community that every person should get his or her spine checked frequently by a qualified chiropractor. Spinal subluxations can cause serious damage to the nervous system and if left intact for an extended period of time, these misalignments can cause permanent dysfunction to nerves that directly influence vital organs and systems within the body. A person’s health can decline substantially if subluxations in the spinal column are not corrected.

2009 Scientific Study Proves Traditional Chiropractic’s Major Premise!

For many years, traditional chiropractic’s major premise (an improperly functioning nervous system, due to a spinal subluxation (misalignment) will cause human beings to have a less than optimal expression of health) has been attacked by mainstream medicine. Regardless of the fact that numerous scientific studies have been conducted by medical researchers that clearly demonstrate the extreme importance of neurological and endocrine integrity in a living person; the chiropractic practice objective is still not taken seriously.

As a practitioner of chiropractic, I have dedicated a good portion of my professional career to the arduous task of attempting to educate my patients about the importance of getting their spines checked on a regular basis.

Although my career as a chiropractor has been very rewarding for me personally, it’s also been an exhausting experience in some ways. To have to continuously go against the conventional mindset of the average health care consumer is not always an enjoyable exercise. When just about every person perceives you as a circle and you’re a square, it can definitely get on your nerves after awhile.

Most people think of traditional chiropractic as something that is less than scientific; a drugless therapy for back pain; or a strange form of massage. Traditional chiropractic, of course, has nothing to do with any of those preconceived, public notions. To begin with, traditional chiropractic is based on very scientific principles, has nothing to do with back pain, and is a completely distinct and separate profession from massage therapy.

It’s not difficult to understand traditional chiropractic theory, it’s just damn inconvenient for everyone involved to change a societal paradigm that directly affects the health and well being of every person on the planet. And I’m not even getting into the financial considerations that are involved with changing such a paradigm.

How do you break the news to the average person that they’ve been continuously lied to throughout their lives? How do you explain to people that the best way to affect healthy changes in their bodies is by removing interferences that can and do impede their true expressions of physiology? And finally, how do you drive the point home that synthetically patented drugs, although they can alter the way you feel, can never provide a human being with a better expression of health?

In 2009, a scientific study was published by The Endocrine Society ® titled, “Endocrine –Disrupting Chemicals.” The premise and conclusion of the study demonstrated that certain chemicals we commonly encounter, in our environment and foods, have the abilities to interfere with the human endocrine system. The endocrine system is responsible for regulating and controlling the many hormones in our bodies. It is the chemical messaging system that ensures proper human physiology occurs.

A breakdown or interference in the endocrine system would cause all sorts of problems to occur in an otherwise healthy person. Whenever interference occurs in our body, physiology suffers. Things like cancer and autoimmune disorders begin to show up and healthy people become unhealthy.

The study that was conducted by The Endocrine Society ® speaks volumes about the importance of the nervous system and also traditional chiropractic. Our nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, spinal nerves) regulates and controls the functions of the endocrine system as well as every other system inside us.

The 2009 study proves, quite convincingly, what traditional chiropractic has been practicing and stating for well over a hundred years; an important factor leading to proper health can be easily achieved by simply removing a type of interference from the human nervous system that commonly occurs in the form of a spinal misalignment, also known as a vertebral subluxation.

Regularly visiting a chiropractor to have your spine’s alignment checked, not just because you have back pain, can improve your health drastically. Understand from this point forward that the integrity of your spine’s alignment is of paramount importance to your health. And if it wasn’t for the fact that this structural problem, which occurs in every human being from time to time, generates zero revenue for pharmaceutical companies, you’d see it advertised on the evening news. The sad truth is that because it doesn’t promote Big Pharma’s agenda, it’s disregarded by “science” and made to look “unscientific.”

Be sure you read the study, linked above, in order to gain a better understanding about how important our nervous system really is when it comes to maintaining a proper level of health.

Understanding Traditional Chiropractic Theory

The human brain sends and receives electrical messages to and from all parts of your body. It is essential that these messages arrive at specific locations, inside of you, throughout your entire life in order for you to remain healthy. The messages travel inside the spinal cord and spinal nerves.

The nervous system is like a giant telephone communication network. It transmits electrical messages that directly affect organs, tissues and cells in the body and it can also trigger the release of chemical messages that allow other modes of communication to take place within our physiology. Whether it’s electrical or chemical communications, the nervous system is behind the transmission of these messages and your body cannot be healthy if the nervous system is not functioning properly.

The spinal cord is very well protected by the spinal bones and the brain is protected by the skull. Spinal bones (vertebrae) are moveable structures and they allow us a great deal of flexibility when we are moving about.

Because the spinal bones sit on top of one another, they form a long canal of bones where the spinal cord runs through. The spinal nerves that exit off the spinal cord pass between openings that are made on the sides of the spinal bones. Sometimes spinal bones become misaligned from each other and this causes them to place a slight amount of pressure on the spinal nerves (vertebral subluxations). When this happens, the messages that are being transmitted through the nervous system become distorted and this causes problems to occur in the body’s physiology.

Traditional chiropractors will nudge the misaligned spinal bones back into their proper anatomical positions by making gentle, manual (by hand) adjustments. This is not done to treat specific conditions of sickness or disease, but rather to correct the misaligned (subluxated) spinal bones. The spinal adjustments help to remove nerve interference and this ultimately allows health to be restored in the body naturally. Many conditions of sickness are then reversed by the body’s own inborn recuperative abilities.

One of the most difficult concepts to get across to people is the devastating effects of a vertebral subluxation. I could show you all kinds of diseases and say that subluxations cause those diseases, but that would not be quite honest. That would be like saying that being a “couch potato” and not exercising regularly causes heart disease. Undoubtedly those are factors, but there are other factors also. No one can possibly say what is the major factor or cause. In addition, I do not want to focus on negatives such as individual diseases.

I believe it is important to be proactive and to discuss the importance of getting your spine checked and adjusted on a regular basis in order to maintain your body and thus allowing you to reach your true potential in every aspect of your life. Unfortunately, some people are only motivated by fear; the fear of getting sick, or dying from some horrible disease. So for those people, let’s take a minute to talk about how bad this thing called a vertebral subluxation really is.

When you have a subluxation in your spine your brain messages are interfered with and your body does not receive all of its proper instructions. Your digestive system will not work at its potential. Your body cannot produce the exact quantity and quality of chemicals necessary to digest your food. Your food will not be absorbed into your body as it should because your cells involved with absorption are not working as they should. Your food cannot be broken down properly. Your organs, tissues and cells involved with changing absorbed food into flesh and blood will not work properly. When you are subluxated, your immune system is not working as it should. Your organs and cells responsible for your resistance to viruses and bacteria are working less than their potential. When you are subluxated you cannot think as well, your coordination is lessened, and your energy levels are diminished. A vertebral subluxation literally affects every part of your body, because every part of your body is directly dependent upon receiving instructions from your brain through your nerve system!

Your subluxation affects every part of your body!!! In this day and age when there are so many stresses upon your body (physical, chemical, and mental) you cannot afford to have an improperly functioning nerve system! You cannot be sure about the quality of the water that you drink, or the air that you breathe. You cannot be sure that your body is getting all of the nutrients that it needs from the food that you eat. You cannot help being exposed to microorganisms, many of which are more powerful than ever because of their ability to adapt to our attempts to destroy them. You can do nothing about the genetic weaknesses that you may have inherited. But by keeping your nerve system free of vertebral subluxations, you can be sure that any potential challenges you may be facing will be handled by your body more efficiently.

Remember that Chiropractic Is Not About Your Back, It’s About Your Life!
