The Missing Towers in the Skyline (Fiction)

Author’s Note:

I wrote this short Mandela Effect story over eight years ago and eventually chose the Moon as the object people couldn’t remember, rather than the Twin Towers, when I developed the idea into the novella “False Memory.”

By John Reizer

Only one person in a hundred seemed to remember the two towers.

Shane Simmons remembered them as two huge columns that rose high above the harbor. He remembered their shadows stretching across New York City streets and the terrible morning when smoke engulfed the entire skyline.

But in the current world, something strange had happened recently. It was as if the historical narrative had been erased from the conscious memories of almost every human mind in the realm.

There was no longer a space where they had once stood. No evidence or prior records, no street maps showing the two construction sites, no buried foundations, nor anything else hinting at their former place in the world existed. More importantly, there was no memorial site.

September 11 was an ordinary date. Ask anyone about the towers, and they would look at you with curiosity.

At first, Shane thought he was going crazy, that the world was playing a trick on him. Then he found others: a bus driver, a teacher, an old man who drew two enormous rectangles above a harbor. These people remembered different details, but they still remembered the two buildings.

Those that could remember began meeting in secret locations, basements and back rooms. They called themselves the Rememberers. Soon, word got out about them and their crazy alleged recollections. The mainstream news called them delusional and conspiracy theorists. Their employers called them unreliable. Soon, even their families learned to ignore them and to change the subject if they brought up the missing towers.

One night, Shane received a message from an anonymous source: a document bearing the seal of a government agency that, officially, didn’t exist.

The document contained information about a narrative correction that had been authorized. The report stated that public attention on realm-control mechanisms exceeded an acceptable level. A solution to remove the Twin Towers’ history to preserve public compliance had been approved.

Shane realized then that the towers were erased because they had become the catalyst for a public awakening. The few who controlled the many needed the many to forget the one event in human history that jeopardized their control over humanity.

The people who controlled every sovereign territory in the Matrix had reached into the world’s story and cut out the part that made people ask who was ultimately holding the pen that wrote the rules of the game.

At the next secret gathering, Shane stood before the others and spoke. “They want us to believe that remembering is a sickness, that we are delusional,” he said. “But our remembering is the one thing they couldn’t edit.”

No one applauded or said a single word except for the old man with the drawing in the back of the room. The others were too afraid to be heard.

The old man in the back held up his drawing of two towers filled with smoke against a deep blue sky. “I remember the towers and 911,” he said proudly.

For a brief moment, so did everyone else in the room.
