A conversation between John Q. Public, Big Medicine, and Big Pharma (Satire)

By Dr. John Reizer

Big Pharma: John, you look healthy, but we can’t leave anything to chance. You should get every screening test available, including blood panels, imaging, genetic markers, and the works.

John Q. Public: But I feel fine, though. Why would I spend my days in waiting rooms if nothing is wrong?

Big Medicine: Because “feeling fine” is a dangerous illusion, John. Modern medicine is all about being proactive. If we can find a microscopic abnormality now, we can treat it before it becomes a crisis. I’m going to schedule you for a full battery of screenings.

Big Pharma: Exactly! The beauty of these tests is their incredible sensitivity. They find everything under the sun.

John Q. Public: That sounds great, but what happens if the tests find something that isn’t actually bothering me?

Big Medicine: We call that a “clinical finding.” Once I have a positive result on paper, I can give you a formal diagnosis. Once you have a diagnosis, I have the professional responsibility to put you on a treatment plan to manage those numbers for the rest of your life.

Big Pharma: And that’s where I come in. I have wonderful new daily maintenance medications that manage those specific markers perfectly. You’ll just need to take these drugs every morning for the rest of your life to keep all the different numbers in the “safe zone.”

John Q. Public: For the rest of my life? Just to fix a number on a lab report? How do I know the “safe zone” is accurate?

Big Medicine: It’s for your own peace of mind, John. We know the “safe zone” is accurate because pharmaceutical companies and doctors agree on this subject. We call that scientific consensus. Now, let’s get you signed up for those quarterly screenings so we can monitor how well the medications are working and decide whether we need to add even more prescriptions.

Big Pharma: I’ll make sure the pharmacy has your file ready. We’re looking forward to a lifelong relationship with you.
