So, you want to be a writer

John’s Two Cents

I came upon this article recently and thought it would be an interesting share for visitors here at NoFakeNews.

Over the past year, I have received more than a few inquiries asking me for advice on how to write stories, books, movies, or other creative projects.

If writing is in your blood, there’s not much you can do about it. If it is not in your blood, you’re probably lucky and don’t realize it.

If you love to write, I advise you to write whenever and as often as possible. It helps quiet the voices when you’re working on projects. 🤣

Other advice I have given to those asking about careers in writing is to ensure you have a backup job, very thick skin, and aren’t easily offended when critical and reader reviews come your way because they will and are not always kind.

I can assure people from personal experience that many of your customers won’t want to pay for your work and will be more than happy to tell you how awful it is.

In all seriousness, I have enjoyed my time writing different projects quite a bit. Writing gives me more satisfaction than not, especially when I am putting together something very cool.

As for the pay, in most cases, it isn’t good! The distribution of your work is not without issues. If and when you have a breakthrough story or movie, it’s rewarding to see the product out there, but most of the money earned won’t ever come your way. Other than that, it’s a lot of fun.

Despite all the negative stuff, I still love being a writer and am enjoying any success that has come with it. 😀

Thank you Roark for putting this clip out again. It so cute and hilarious! And, yes, it reminds me of my son. Babble, babble, babble! Haha! 🤣

    Thanks for the laugh!

Thank you, John, for your kind words. I am sure that your mother’s decline was a very rough time for you. Having a loved one whose mind is not all there is indeed a challenge to have to live and deal with.

Although these ups and downs with my son are nothing new to me. He’s 29 years old. And believe me, there have been a lot worse things. It is probably just a phase. And he can be cute with his babble sometimes. Although not when it’s during the night. 🤣

    Hi Lisa,

I think I probably shared this already.

It always makes me laugh, but it might be too close for comfort. Hope not.

It’s called Talkative Frenchie. Perhaps you can relate?

    Hang in there,

    Roark

I do feel for you, Lisa. I can’t understand precisely what you must go through daily with your son, but I have had some experience with that kind of behavior. In 2015, my mom’s dementia was fully evident, and her personality drastically changed. There had been signs of the disorder that went back to 2007 or earlier, but it became full-blown from a symptomatic standpoint in 2015.

    Hang in there! 👍🙂

You have accomplished a lot in between patient visits and off times, John! Amazing what you have managed to squeeze in! 👍🙂

As of lately, sometimes I have a hard time just thinking around my house. My autistic son (childhood vaccine-injured) has developed a new past time of constantly babbling nonsense. And although it was good to hear his voice more in the beginning because usually he’s primarily non-verbal, it’s not so great anymore. I bought myself a headphone set to help block out the noise! And it’s just all crazy talk. I think he likes hearing himself. He repeats things over and over. “This land is mine, not yours.”
I don’t know where he got that one from? Or much of what he says for that matter!

Life in the realm is so much fun! 🤣

It’s a great outlet for me more than anything, Lisa. It’s never been about money-making in my situation. Luckily my professional career took care of that and allowed me the time to write. Many of my works were written in my office in between patient visits and on off days.

John, writing for me is both an enjoyment and an outlet. Also, it gives you an opportunity to be creative. But I certainly would never consider it to be a career or a way to make money.

And maybe someday I’ll write a fictional story. However, thus far I have not had the incentive to do so, and I might not ever will. And that’s okay.

Although I occasionally think about it. What will be will be! 🙂
