The Smart Cities of Tomorrow

The smart cities of tomorrow might look different from the traditional models we know today. Buildings, roads, vehicles, utilities, and public services could all soon be connected to a central computer network.

In these cities, a digital currency policy could become the only way citizens pay for food, transportation, housing, and other necessities. Unlike traditional cash systems, digital money could potentially be distributed and programmed with very specific rules. In a future system, those in power could freeze or turn off a person’s digital funds if that person fails to follow certain government medical recommendations. Think vaccines!

Surveillance could become even more a part of our everyday lives than it is today. Cameras, sensors, facial recognition systems, phones, vehicles, and other devices could constantly collect information about where people go and what they do. Of course, officialdom might justify these technologies as necessary to improve public safety, transportation efficiency, or city services.

The same technologies that make a city more convenient could also give those in power unprecedented control. Hypothetically, if money, identification, transportation, healthcare, and surveillance were all connected to the same digital infrastructure, losing access to one system could affect many parts of a person’s daily life. Think about the consequences of that situation for a moment.

The central question isn’t simply whether smart cities are technologically possible. It is how much control society is willing to give the systems that run them and what protections would exist for people who disagree with those elites in power.
