A writer who follows NoFakeNews has asked me to discuss how the motel scene in the movie Target List came to fruition. He thought it would be interesting for readers and other writers to understand how the scenes that end up in a feature film are edited and rewritten many times before the final version is produced. So, here is that explanation.
In the 2019 novel, The Target List, I wrote the motel scene with Clyde Daniel, not Donna Sawyer, as the main protagonist who enters a hotel room where a hired assassin awaits the return of Clyde and Donna.
From the Target List Novel…
In the novel, I had multiple assassins in the storyline, whom Clyde killed.
When MJ Palo and I began transforming the novel into a screenplay, we made several changes to the story. In this particular scene, we decided to soften the violence a bit and make Donna the character who enters the motel room to deal with the hired killer.
We still incorporated Donna hiding a gun between some towels instead of pillows, and surprising the hired gunman.
We also made a big decision to leave the assassin duct-taped to a chair alive and well, not to mention adding some timely comedic dialogue and a prop—a pocket knife that Clyde pulls out as Donna has a gun trained on Mr. X.
MJ Palo, Andrew Arguello, and I had several meetings and discussions about incorporating well-timed comedic moments into our story. We vacillated on the idea and finally decided that, in the right proportions, the adventure comedy route was the way to shoot this movie. In retrospect, I’m pleased with that decision.
There were several aspects of the novel that we were unable to incorporate into our film due to financial constraints. Even though Target List is a microbudget film, it still costs $2,500- $3,000 per minute to produce, and we had to be realistic about what could be included during production.
