New Money from Old Shows: How AI Is Enabling Product Placement In TV Shows

By Ashley Hayes

Product placement in a TV show, movie or commercial plays a huge role in that brand’s bottom line. If a company is able to get their product to be worn by a celebrity in a top TV show, or eaten by a celebrity in a movie scene, it can almost immediately translate into actual sales — and big ones.

Virtual product placement has changed the game completely. With AI, advertisers are able to not only virtually place their products in shows (or movies or commercials, etc.), they are able to do so in older, syndicated shows. So products that weren’t actually there in the original show (because there was no contract in place at the time) can now appear in re-runs. Furthermore, they can be “placed” there in real time, and altered in ways that target a specific audience, saving untold millions in production costs, and making potentially millions more for the advertisers — and the product placement companies. (With that last line, I guess it’s not surprising that one of the first AI-driven product placement companies was founded by Bill Gates. That guy has his hand in everything.)

Check out the Telegraph article linked below, and its accompanying video, to see this amazing technology in action.
