Since 1879, law enforcement has been legally permitted to view the outside of every citizen’s mail without a warrant and digitally store it. With a warrant, they can view the inside; without a warrant, but with a claim that it’s for “national security purposes,” they can also view the contents inside—all without your knowledge or consent. Other surveillance programs run through the USPS include:
Mail Isolation Control and Tracking (MICT) wherein “an automated system photographs the exterior of every piece of mail processed in the U.S. and retains images for a period of time;” and
Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP): The Postal Inspection Service (the law enforcement arm of the USPS). Google states that the USPS has been criticized for using this program to conduct open-source intelligence gathering, including monitoring social media, for purposes beyond traditional postal crimes.
