Whether I like it or not, I have a connection with the film industry because of my involvement with the movie Target List.

As a result of that involvement, I receive communications from others in the movie business. One such letter was recently sent to me that illustrates the corruption in movie making, and in this particular situation, Israel. I thought it prudent to share the letter here on NoFakeNews:

Dear Dr. Reizer,

After being plagued by allegations of corruption for decades, the Israeli film industry has been dealt another blow, this time by the right-wing government which completed its takeover of film funding in the war-battered country.

As we previously reported, the Israeli film funds have been controlled for decades by the same cadre with more than 50% of total funding going to productions related to Israeli mogul, and personal friend of Benjamin Netanyahu, Moshe Edrey, owner of the largest cinema chain in Israel.

We extensively reported on the allegations of corruption at the Rabinowitz and Gesher funds which were managed by the same people for more than twenty years. At the Israeli Film Fund, the other 50% of funding is largely distributed to a select few, mostly those who are graduates of the two leading film schools in the country, who work both as directors and film selectors in a revolving-door fashion, preventing newcomers or outsiders from breaking into the industry.

In recent weeks the local film industry was dealt a new and perhaps final blow, the overtaking of funding by the righ-wing government, which canceled the previous system in favour of an even more corrupt and opaque one. Recently, the Israeli Film Review Council forbade screenings of a documentary on 1948 War, and more than 50 films refused to screen at this year’s DocAviv festival, with many not bothering to respond to invitation emails.

It saddens us that in a country filled with talented filmmakers, the corrupt local industry and government hold complete control of artistic output, and now, due to political reasons, Israeli films and filmmakers have become de facto toxic with boycotts by both audiences and festivals making any investment or co-production in Israeli films a financial suicide.

As the Cannes Film Festival opens this week, we remind our readers of the controversy surrounding the undeclared conflict of interest of the 2019 short Palme d’Or, where the Greek jury member, whose producer had produced the winning film, had told other filmmakers that he had “thrown their films out of consideration.” Six years later, there is still no response from the festival and the people involved are still working for the festival. This casts a long shadow over the integrity of the film industry as a whole.
