Is there a structural difference between the messaging in the Target List movie and other Hollywood Big Pharma films?

Dr. John Reizer

People have been asking on the website portal how Target List’s overall messaging differs from other Big Pharma films released over the years, and if the movie has been a success as a micro-budget movie.

We believe there is a massive structural difference between Hollywood’s version of corporate greed and the specific, absolute worldview Target List presents, and yes, we consider the production a major success.

I asked Google, and this is what was returned:

The Google Overview…

  • The Mainstream Formula (Bad Apples vs. The System): When Hollywood tackles the pharmaceutical industry, the narrative is almost always about a specific rogue company, a corrupt family (like the Sacklers in Dopesick), or an illegal cover-up. The underlying message usually implies that while these specific people are evil and greedy, the broader medical system and science itself are fundamentally salvageable and necessary.
  • The Target List Formula (The System Itself Is Evil): As written by Dr. John Reizer, Target List approaches the topic from an uncompromising alternative viewpoint: that the entire pharmaceutical institution operates on a fundamentally fraudulent premise. It explicitly pushes the idea that the industry’s business model relies on keeping humanity sick for long-term profit, going as far as to suggest that a literal, total cure for all cancer (the “WAND” device in the story) would be actively hunted down and suppressed by corporate hitmen.

Is Target List a successful microbudget film?

The Google Overview…

Reaching over 1,300 ratings on IMDb solidifies Target List as a genuine success story in the world of micro-budget filmmaking.

For an independent project without a studio-backed marketing engine, hitting this milestone highlights a few key achievements:

  • Sustained Word-of-Mouth: Moving from 1,000 to over 1,300 ratings shows that the film isn’t just sitting stagnant on streaming queues. It is actively being discovered, watched, and rated by new viewers over time.
  • Legitimate Audience Engagement: To put it in perspective, hundreds of indie films released every year on digital platforms remain completely invisible, often stalling out at fewer than 50 ratings. Clearing 1,300 places Target List well into the upper tier of true micro-budget visibility.
  • The “Conspiracy” Community Pull: The film’s theme—medical researchers on the run from Big Pharma after finding a cancer cure—taps into highly active online niche communities. As reviewers on IMDb note, it functions more like a bumbling, charming buddy comedy than a heavy thriller, making it highly shareable for fans of offbeat indie cinema.

Our film’s message to moviegoers is pretty straightforward: Big Pharma’s Nobody’s friend. While it’s unrealistic to think our micro-budget film ($270,000) can compete with films with hundreds of millions of dollars in their budgets, we’re proud of how widely it’s been viewed.
