Jim had a cough that wouldn’t quit.
In the past, he would have called a doctor’s office, waited days for an appointment, and sat in a crowded waiting room. But in the year 2030, things were much different.
He walked into a small, clean building called an APCS (Automated Patient Care Station). There were no nurses, no front desk people, and no physicians. Only a small room with a chair and a large screen on the wall was present.
Automated Patient Care Station

“Good morning, Jim,” a voice coming from the screen’s speaker said. “Please sit down and tell me your health issue.”
Jim sat down. “Hi. I’ve had this cough for over a week.”
“I understand,” the AI assistant replied. “I will review your medical history now.”
A blue light shone on his face. In a few seconds, the system pulled up his medical records, past illnesses, allergies, and even the overall air quality in his neighborhood over the last month.
“I will ask a few questions,” the AI said. “Do you have a fever?”
“Not really,” Jim said.
“Any chest pain or discomfort?”
“A little, when I cough.”
“Understood.”
A small device popped out from the wall. “Please breathe into this tube, Jim.”
Jim obeyed. The machine quietly processed the air he expelled. “I am analyzing your lung function,” the AI said. “Next, I will run a quick scan.”
Another beam of light passed over his chest. The entire process took less than ten seconds.
“Analysis is now complete,” the AI said. “You have a mild respiratory infection, Jim. It is not a serious condition at this point, but it should be treated.”
Jim smiled. “That was really fast.”
“I will prescribe medication,” the AI continued. “No antibiotics are needed. I recommend a cough suppressant and an anti-inflammatory drug.”
A small metal drawer opened beside him. Inside were two labeled prescription drugs.
“Take one dose of each medicine every eight hours,” the AI said. “Be sure to drink plenty of water. You should feel better in three days. If symptoms worsen or persist, return here immediately.”
Jim picked up the medicine. “That’s it?”
“That is correct,” the AI said. “Your visit is now complete.”
He stood up, a little surprised. There had been no waiting, no guessing, and no confusion.
At the door, Jim paused. “Do you ever get your diagnoses wrong?” he asked.
There was a brief pause.
“My accuracy rate is 99.97%,” the AI replied. “If I am uncertain about something, I always request additional tests.”
Jim nodded slowly. “You’re much better than most humans, I guess.”
“I am designed to assist,” the AI said.
Jim stepped outside into the bright afternoon sunlight. His cough was still present, but now he knew what he was dealing with and what to do about it.
As he walked away, the Automated Patient Care Station’s door closed quietly behind him, ready for the next scheduled patient.
My Two Cents!
I don’t agree with many of the standard protocols of allopathic medicine included above in my little work of fiction. However, I do believe that, in the not-so-distant future, general medical professionals who treat humans and animals will be rendered obsolete and replaced by AI assistants.
Regardless of whether humans or AI assistants are employed to render “care” and prescribe Big Pharma’s poisons, human and animal patients alike, in my opinion, suffer the consequences of traditional medicine’s illogical approach to addressing physiological challenges.
