A Fictional Narrative (Or is it?)
by John Reizer
What if the first European travelers who came to America found something utterly different than what our history contends?
What if the first travelers who sailed across the great ocean, expecting to find wild forests and empty shores, found the remains of an advanced civilization? Imagine the surprise on their faces when they came ashore and discovered something that was beyond their minds’ wildest imagination.
When they finally stepped onto the sandy shores, the travelers from afar saw something that seemed nearly impossible.
Before them stood tall structures of glass and metal, reaching high into the sky, far higher than any church steeple in their European homeland.
Wide roads stretched in every direction, built from some unfamiliar smooth black stone. Strange metal wagons sat in long lines, though no horses pulled them. Lights, frozen in place, hung over the streets, as if waiting for someone to switch them on.
“Who built all this?” whispered one traveler.
They moved carefully through the empty city. The buildings had many floors, with windows that reflected their likeness. Inside, they found rooms filled with objects they could not understand, boxes that glowed without fire, chairs that moved on their own, and sticks with buttons that did nothing when pressed.
It was clear that this place had once been full of life. But now it was silent.
The travelers felt small as they walked among the city’s giant constructions. They wondered who had lived here, how they had built such wonders, and why they had mysteriously vanished. No stories from their homeland had ever spoken of a place like this one.
At sunset, the glass from the buildings caught the last light of the day and glistened like gold. The travelers bore the weight of a truth that did not match anything they had been previously told.
They were undoubtedly not the first people to discover this futuristic-looking city. Someone had come long before them. And whoever they were, they had been far more advanced than anyone in the world they knew.
The travelers stood in the quiet city, uncertain of what their discovery meant, but sure of one thing: History was something entirely different from what they’d been led to believe.
