Unfortunately, these things come together to shape public opinion on unprecedented scales. Not least in the past 3 years. When you have the kind of insider knowledge that Adian shares in Tell-Lie-Vision, even watching adverts becomes unbearable.
“I used to quite enjoy watching adverts, their creativity and styles” he says, “but now find them really intrusive, irritating and have to turn the sound off.”
Because of sheer manipulation?
“Yeah, I just said, ‘It’s too much’. You can see the agendas to manipulate and steer an audience.”
I’m curious to know what specific examples of emotionally manipulative filming techniques there may be…
“I could list many, says Adian, “If you’re delivering some figures for example, and you want to make it seem like they are the credible stats, you can do that through impressive graphics, always moving, pace and style. That way they appear ‘factual’. If you want to convey emotion, you bubble some music underneath. You can also, for example, if you’re talking about a lost relative, when the cameraman hears that you could potentially start crying, just add a little slow push and get on closer and closer to their face.
“As a viewer, you watch, and mentally, you’re being drawn into that moment. Even in delivery, the terminology, the lighting, the setting; these all play on the subconscious mind.”
