The Meeting and Offer I Dare Not Refuse
Speculative Fiction
By Dr. John Reizer
When I finally enter the office, I see an older man with closely cropped grey hair, dressed in a dark suit, sitting behind a wooden desk.
There’s an uncomfortable period of no dialogue between us.
“This is what’s going to happen,” he says, finally breaking the silence. His two hands, clasped together, are resting on the desktop – a white envelope is beneath them.
I walk a few steps closer before momentarily pausing.
“You’re going to refrain from all this writing. Do you understand me?“
I continue towards the man. Dark Suit separates his hands, picks up the envelope, and holds it before me.
“What’s this?” I ask.
“A truce!” he replies.
I grab the envelope that has my name printed on it. “A truce for what?“
“Open it!” Dark Suit says. His face remains expressionless, like one of the agents in the Matrix movie.
I stare at the envelope briefly before flipping it over and breaking the back seal—a PowerBall ticket’s inside with the prior week’s date.
“I don’t understand,“ I say, pretending not to know what I have already figured out.
” You have two choices,” Dark Suit begins.
A bead of perspiration forms on my right temple and descends the side of my face. I wipe the sweat away with my index finger.
“You’ll retire, stop writing, cash the ticket, and enjoy the rest of your life, or…”
“Or what?” I interrupt him.
Another few moments of awkward silence pass before a smile forms from the corners of Dark Suit’s mouth. “Or we‘ll arrange a more permanent retirement scenario for you!”
Does this happen in real life?
Do lotteries finance other black operations?

Here’s a title for you. ”The Real Story of Steven Bing” lol
It does make one wonder how much money goes to the actual cause marketed and how much gets funneled to other hidden projects.
Thanks for sharing, Roark! 🙂

So I was tempted to go for the Ronald McDonald raffle that benefits children. Tickets used to be $100 and are now $150. Prizes consist of million dollar homes, $100k vehicles and vacations as well as $10,000 prizes and then some small prizes.
All are cash optional, which would be the only option for me since no doubt, the IRS is waiting for their hefty cut from the moment any winnings are announced.
I have wondered how honest this program is with the proceeds, prizes, and awards to children in need. Years Ago, I met a Mexican neighbor, who volunteered that he was diagnosed with leukemia as a kid. He told his story with pride, since he was a survivor, and some families struggle to make ends meet, so he seemed pretty enamored with the Ronald McDonald House Charities for Children. That’s when I first heard about it.
Since then I have received a catalog of the prizes planned each year. Of course the changes of me winning anything substantial aren’t great. Better than the lottery, perhaps, but still not great.
It is clever to tempt people to buy an expensive raffle ticket by telling them it is for charity.

I always believed that lotteries would be a clever way to hide payments to those tied to black projects not meant for most to see.

Intriguing dialogue, John. And a bit creepy! But I can see where the controlling powers might use the lottery to get those that they want to get rid of, out of their hair. And it’s despicable, but I think it’s probably better to (cash) comb a tangle out than to cut it off with scissors. That’s too permanent! 🤣

It’s a wild and crazy world/realm, Sandy! 😃

You can’t do this! That’s just enough sample fiction to make me crazy. And yes I do think the lottery is used for all kind of nefarious things. Maybe that;s why so many winners lose it all and have down on their luck experiences. A lot of the winners have no relatives and are homeless/near homeless. Perfect for a payoff.
